Tell your story
When writing a narrative essay you want to captivate your reader with a story. To do this think long and hard about what story you want to tell. Do you want it to be suspenseful and keep your readers on their toes, or would you rather tell a story of love and bring the readers to tears. You need to consider these things while brainstorming a topic. You know you have done your job if your readers have an emotional response to your writing.

Have some type of setting
Most stories will take place in a specific place on a specific day. To give your narrative essay more of an impact, pick a place that will compliment the story. For example, if you are going to write a story about a ghost for Halloween you will want to consider the setting of an abandoned house on a dark stormy night. The more detail you can add into the surroundings of the story, the more successful it will be.

Build your characters as many as you can
One of the most important steps to take when developing the story is to create the characters that will play the story out. To create a character is to know them. A writer will have conversations with their characters to getting to know them better so they can in turn bring them to life on the page.

Think of your climax
Climax of a narrative essay is its apex. This is the part of the story where all of the events build to one main point. This can be an assassination of a character, or where the treasure hunter finds the huge cavern of jewels. It doesn't matter what it is, what matters is how you develop it and how you play it out! Think carefully when you are creating your climax, this part of the story your audience has been waiting for.

Give your readers small hints of your climax
Throughout your narrative essay, you want to give small hints as to what your climax will be. This practice keeps the reader involved. They will be so interested in wanting to figure out the climax that they will keep reading until they hit it. A great writer will give these hints without compromising the secret of the essay.

Describe all the situations the reader can visualize
You want your readers to be able to put themselves in the characters shoes. To do this you will have to describe every detail in a situation. You have to describe the smells, the feeling, the taste etc, everything so that the reader can see it as if they were standing in the same room. This will make your narrative essay very successful.
